What is causing the leaves on my maple trees to turn black and die? And can anything be done about it?

Your question is an interesting one, that leads me to ask you some questions as well: Are all the leaves affected?
Are all your maple trees showing the same conditions?
Did the black begin as spots on the leaves that progressed to affect the whole leaf? When did you first notice the problem?
