Organic compost or mulch

Asked June 19, 2020, 1:35 AM EDT

Is it safe to use newsprint or corrugated boxes in compost or mulch if my intention is to plant organic vegetables? I am concerned about adding printers inks or other chemicals.

Thank you for your question. Newspaper and corrugated boxes are safe to compost. Glossy print magazines, inserts and similar mailers have toxic ink. Before tearing down and adding corrugated paper, remove labels and tape. Some corrugated material is reinforced with plastic filaments, which are impossible to remove, and are unwanted in the garden. You can recycle them, but you should not home compost them. http://compost.css.cornell.edu/faq.html#newspaper Good luck!
