Vegetable garden - pole beans

Asked June 18, 2020, 8:14 PM EDT

Dear Maryland Extension Expert, My pole beans have reached the top of their 7' and 8' trellises. They are yard long beans. What should I do with the growing tips that are still looking to climb higher? Both trellises are vertical rectangles. One trellis leans against our shed and one is in the middle of the garden, about 6' away from an equally sized parallel cantaloupe-watermelon trellis. Your advice would be appreciated. Sincerely, Denise Nee

Hi- wow, that's fast growth. You can head back the growing tips at any point to maintain a certain height and manage unruly growth. It will cause two new lateral shoots to emerge from the cut end.
