Would you mind helping me identify two plants?

Asked June 18, 2020, 3:41 PM EDT

Hi, my yard in Severna Park is teeming with two types of plants that I haven't been able to identify. Would one of your experts mind taking a look at the two attached photos to let me know their opinion? I'm sure this is pretty basic stuff, but I am quite the amateur and I haven't been able to find anything in the UMD Extension or other horticultural resources that quite matches these two plants. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing your thoughts! -Steven

The first photo is broadleaf plantain.

The second photo shows violets (weedy kind) and everything else is a weed, too, except the liriope.

Both of these weeds are in our weed gallery (which may come in handy for some of your other weeds) in the summer perennial weed category: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/lawn-weed-id-and-management

Violets are tough to manage. Since they are ornamental, some people just live with them.

To fill in those bare areas, there are some excellent groundcovers in a list on this page: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/flowers/groundcovers
