Fast growing and deer resistant

Asked June 18, 2020, 10:56 AM EDT

I live west of Fern Ridge Reservoir up on Demming Ridge. We have lots of deer that seem to eat everything I plant! We need something to plant near The gravel road, to help provide shade and catch some of the dust made from vehicles.

There are a number of options for hedges or shrubs that are deer resistant and would be tall enough and dense enough to catch some of the dust and provide a little shade. Mountain Laurel, Juniper, Western Red Cedar, Giant Arborvitae, and Boxwood are a few options that are deer proof. Keep in mind that many of these, particularly young trees, will need to be protected from deer when young (e.g. a small wire fence around the tree). You can find lists of other deer resistant options that will grow well in the Pacific Northwest here: https://s3.wp.wsu.edu/uploads/sites/2076/2017/07/C063-Deer-Resistant-Plants-14.pdf, https://www.oregonlive.com/homesandgardens/2010/01/deer-resistant_plants.html and https://emswcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/OSU-Deer-Resistant-Plants.pdf.
