Gypsy moth infestation

Asked June 17, 2020, 2:13 PM EDT

Hi, I have a cottage on long lake in Hillman. The fuzzy caterpillars are eating all the leaves from my oak trees. Don't think spraying is allowed in this area with the water so close. Anything I can do, should I be concerned? Worst case is this can be a note to you for a potential hotspot if you track this sort of thing.

Hello.

Thanks for the report. Unfortunately there are lots of gypsy moth hot spots this year. Spraying large trees requires special equipment and can be quite expensive.

Will they kill the trees?

Probably not. Healthy oaks can withstand a considerable amount of defoliation without being seriously harmed.
