Locust tree pruning

Can I cut a branch (about 4” around) off my locust tree now or do I need to wait for winter? Can I safely cut off suckers from this tree and an ash tree now? I’m concerned with causing damage from disease carrying insects by cutting in summer.

You can lop off a branch on your locust tree now, and you can also cut down suckers. While the ideal period of time for pruning is late winter, on most trees it can be done in late spring and summer. The trees you should avoid pruning outside the normal winter pruning period are oaks, because the oak wilt insect vectors are active from April to late summer. Read here:
