Topping off a columnar apple tree

Asked June 16, 2020, 2:22 PM EDT

Hello. Can I shorten the central leader on a columnar apple tree without damaging the tree or its fruit production? I want to shorten it by 1-2 feet. I've found a fair amount of information about pruning columnar apples but nowhere can I find info about pruning/cutting the top.

You can top your columnar apple tree without a problem. If you do now (June), there will be less regrowth than if you prune in the dormant season. Regardless, you can reduce the height of the tree.

Good luck.
