Lunar underwing moth

We found several of these at our house and we researched them online. It looks like they are a western European species and have only been reported in Virginia. When it flies, it has a pale orange under wing with a black edge.

Thank you for the image.

This insect is night-flying moth, Noctua pronuba. It arrived in Oregon nearly 20 years ago. Its caterpillar is called the winter cutworm and is a pest of many garden plants and agricultural crops. The caterpillar feeds at night during the fall and winter months if the temperature is 40F or higher.
