Maple tree disease

Asked June 5, 2020, 1:17 PM EDT

Maple leaves are turning dark brown and falling to the ground. 2 of our maple trees are affected. What to do? What diseases are going around that affect maple trees? These are mature trees, over 25 yrs old.

Hello,
It looks like the late freeze we had this past May damaged those leaves. Otherwise healthy trees will bounce back from this kind of damage. If we see some very dry periods this summer, watering the trees can help the trees recover more fully. Fertilizing is not recommended for stressed trees. Here is an article written in response to a similar late cold snap a few years ago:https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/dont_panic_over_frost_damage_to_trees_and_shrubs
I hope this is helpful.
