Maple tree leaves turning brown and falling off.

Asked June 4, 2020, 2:10 PM EDT

We have a fairly large maple tree on our lot. We built a new house last year so the tree probably experienced a bit of stress over part of the root zone. The tree started having leaves brown at the edges and leaves are falling off the tree. This is affecting probably 75% of the branches. There is a hollow area at the base of the tree but when we had an arborist grade the trees two years ago he considered it healthy at the time. We need some guidance on who can help us. We would like to save the tree if possible.

It is difficult to diagnose the problem from the photo. Here is a reference from Extension on browning leaves on a maple: https://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/deciduous/maple/leavesbrown.html

As you can see there are several possibilities. I recommend you call an arborist for an on-site look see and diagnosis.
