Brown leaves on Otto Luykens Laurel

Asked June 2, 2020, 12:39 PM EDT

While recently pruning our three Otto Luykens foundation plants, we noticed brown leaves on the back side of the shrubs closest to the house. The plants are approximately 15 years old and are on the NW side of the house. We have never noticed this problem before while pruning. Photo's attached. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

This looks like symptoms of cold damage on the foliage. You can prune out the damaged foliage back to healthy tissue. The plant will recover. We notice new foliage and that is a good sign.

You can send us additional photos if you notice more symptoms. Here is our blog post on how to grow cherry laurels successfully in the landscape. https://marylandgrows.umd.edu/2019/01/07/qa-whats-wrong-with-my-cherry-laurel-shrubs/
