Can you please identify the pest on my tomatoes and peppers and recommendations for getting rid of the problem. I squished the bugs for now.

Hi- you've encountered adult tortoise beetles. They feed on morning glory family plants like sweet potato and occasionally on tomato family plants. The dar area on their back is a fecal shield (they are "frass packers") to deter predators. The damage is usually insignificant unless populations are high. There is only one generation per year. We recommend you continue to remove them by hand.
