Chicks vent is too small?

Asked May 29, 2020, 1:32 PM EDT

We have chickens for pets and fr egg production. A 3 week old chick had a problem with a ligament in her leg. We splinted it and now her leg seems fine. She’s eating and growing but very slowly. Had pasty butt, then upon further exam, seemed to have a prolapse. Prep H seemed to hurt so we switched to oil. After a week or so, seems her vent is too small and we’re concerned she’ll have trouble laying eggs. What should we do for her?

This bird still has much growing to do so don't worry about egg laying at this point. As egg production begins, hormone releases will cause changes to allow eggs to pass. It is unlikely a prolapse, it may be a developmental issue, if so, the bird will probably be sickly and not grow well and may die from the problem. There is no easy fix to these types of problems in young chickens.
