Almond Tree --Sap and Dropping Yellow Leaves

Asked May 25, 2020, 4:45 PM EDT

I have a small almond tree that has yellowing leaves that are dropping, blackening new growth branches, and multiple blobs of sap along the trunk. Indicator plants (herbs) in the whiskey barrel with the tree (has drainage) indicate it is getting enough water and has no fertilizer burn or imbalances. Are the sap blobs from some kind of bores?

Almonds are susceptible to the same insect pests as peaches and apricots. One of these is the peach tree borer, which is fairly common. Blobs of sap could be from their exit wounds, but could also be simply from stress.
