Pruning ginkgo trees

Asked May 22, 2020, 10:44 PM EDT

I have 4 dwarf ginkgo trees , 6 years old which are not dwarf anymore. Can I remove 2 feet of bottom branches and bring down the height as well. Thanks

Thank you for your question. As a general rule, trying to make a tree into a shape or height that you want it is not going to be successful in the long run, any more than you could limit a child’s height. Having said that, you can, with diligent pruning, keep it in the preferred size and shape while you are ‘on the watch.’ Here is an Extension article about how to do it: https://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=28296&sharing=yes. Good luck!
