Mold below surface in raised beds

Asked May 22, 2020, 6:27 PM EDT

Hi, While planting starts in my raised beds I noticed beneath the surface sections of the compost had turned to a mold like substance (pictures attached). After digging through the rest of the bed is seems like pockets of this are happening in different sections of the bed. Any idea what this is and what I should do here? I filled them full of organic compost last year purchased from a landscaping supply company in North Portland. Thanks, Brian

This is likely normal and part of the composting cycle. Mold and fungus are important organism as they break down organic material making it more 'bio-available' to plants. In general, compost should be used as an amendment to soil and not the full growing medium. You may want to mix in some of the native soil with the compost.
