Hello, I have a Russian Tortoise, rescue. I recent took it to a Vet and he found it has Pinworms. She is on medication for 2-3 weeks then will be re tested. Issue: her outdoor enclosure area I have no idea how to rid the Pinworms? Is in a area much time was spent to build her a safe covered enclosure. Is around a Palm Tree. How do I treat the soil? I am wondering how long will the Pinworms live? I moved her inside to a Tortoise Table with new coconut fiber bedding. I am in hope to put her back outdoors in 3 weeks after the medication is all given. Any safe tips? Thank you! Julie Brown

Thank you for your question, Julie. I’ve been unable to find much information on this. The following indicates that these parasites cannot survive “high temperatures but in ideal circumstances they can survive in the environment for up to 1 month.” https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/pinworm This article suggests removal of the soil and disposal in a landfill is helpful: https://www.petsandparasites.org/resources/faqs Perhaps you can build another ‘recovery area’ in which she can live for a month or retest, whichever is longer. That said, your veterinarian may have ideas. Good luck!
