Gardening Newbe - Tay Berries

Asked May 21, 2020, 2:25 PM EDT

I'm new to gardening and I've recently planted some small Tay berry plants I received from a friend. This morning I noticed that something has been munching on the lower leaves (see attached photos). What should I do about this?

Thank you for your question. I believe your plant is infested with a sawfly. There are two types, and the Monophadnoides rubi seems the most probable based on the feeding pattern (holes). You can read about them here: https://pnwhandbooks.org/insect/small-fruit/blackberry-raspberry/blackberry-raspberry-sawfly The chemical controls are listed at the end of the page, including some organic ones. First, do some investigation to find the eggs and larvae. Then follow the container directions for application. Using them during rains is probably a waste. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
