Trees are a long term investment and the best advice is to obtain a soil test prior to buying a tree to determine suitability. Birch for one prefer a lower pH, acidic soil to do well. pH is one of a number of important measures you would learn from a soil test. You advise what you wish to plant in the soil sample that you send and the lab will issue a report stating exactly what is needed for optimal growth. Understand also that changing soil pH, especially in larger amounts, is difficult to accomplish, meaning that selecting a tree for the soil type you have is recommended.
