pruning asters

If I cut back my asters now, will they grow back bushier and produce more flowers?

In general, you can prune back the asters and this will help with branching and bushy growth and delays flowering.
You can use a technique called pinching on asters. See our web page on perennials and pinching back asters. This produces more compact plants with stronger stems. This can be done several time before July 4th. Pinching delays flowering. The trick of pinching only some of the stems extends the blooming season, since the pinched portions will bloom later.
