Hello, I'm interested in starting a vegetable garden and was wondering what vegetables you would recommend growing in Franklin county. Thank you!

Hi there,

You made me smile with your question, because the best vegetables to grow are the ones you would eat. That being said, you should know that we are in the USDA Hardiness Zone of 6a. There is a long list of what you can grow here, but at this point in the year, you will mostly need to rely on what's available in the garden centers for small starts of vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. Most items started from seed indoors, such as those, would have needed to be started six weeks ago or more. But right now would be perfect for putting seeds of other vegetables in the ground.

Wayne County Extension published a good fact sheet on starting a vegetable garden with specific plant suggestions: https://wayne.osu.edu/sites/wayne/files/imce/Program_Pages/ANR/Garden/Planning%20and%20Planting%20%2...
Also, the University of Illinois Extension Service has this bit of information that includes the dates for planting seeds, and setting out plants: https://web.extension.illinois.edu/vegguide/step06.cfm
You can see how that compares with the recommendations from the University of Vermont for Zone 5-6 planting dates: https://www.uvm.edu/sites/default/files/Extension-Master-Gardener/Zones5plantsch.pdf
You may also be interested in having your soil tested before you begin -- or at some point in the future. This fact sheet will give you information on that process: https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/hyg-1132
This could be a lot of fun for you this summer and I wish you good luck. Please feel free to write again.

Thank you very much!

You are most welcome -- my tomatoes are ready to go in the garden and seeds are waiting to be planted. Such an exciting time of the year. Enjoy!
