Short rhubarb stalks

Asked May 12, 2020, 4:45 PM EDT

My rhubarb plants are in their 3rd year so I wanted to pick them for the first time this year. They have lush, profuse green leaves but short, fat stalks; none longer than 6 inches. They are in clay soil that typically retains moisture as it is in the lower part of the yard which ultimately slopes to a pond. I gave them a dose of well composted manure last fall. I don't know the variety

The most likely culprit is how dry it has been. I would suspect you will see your plant grow quite a bit after this weekend's rain.
