Purple ash not leafing out

Asked May 12, 2020, 12:45 PM EDT

My purple ash has no leaves or buds. It’s always gotten leaves late, but mid-May seems quite late. Last summer about half of the tree was bare. Is my tree dead?

Unfortunately, it does not sound good for your ash tree and is most likely dead. There is a high probability that it was killed by the emerald ash borer. This insect is an invasive species that found its way into Maryland in 2003 in PG County and has spread throughout the state. Please see the following information on eab. The dead tree should be removed as soon as possible. Trees killed by eab become very brittle in a short period of time.
