Can you tell if this tree is dead?
This definitely looks like freeze damage on your Sweet Bay Magnolia. We have had several frost and freezes over the past few weeks. We experienced several nights in the 20’s after new growth had started from the warmer days we had in late March & early April..
There is nothing you can do at this point. Trees are equipped with a set of secondary buds that can develop and produce new growth. I would hold off and do not prune or do anything. In most cases this damage will be covered up as temperatures warm up and new growth continues.
