Raise Soil Acidity

Asked May 11, 2020, 5:50 AM EDT

We want to plant blueberry bushes and need to raise the acidity of the soil. What is the most effective way to increase soil acidity? Will adding manure to the soil increase soil acidity? We have chicken and horse manure compost on hand. Thank you, Kurt Shea

Blueberries do indeed need acidic soils, pH down around 5.0. First recommendation is to acquire a soil test, the only way to learn exactly what may be needed. Lowering soil pH usually involves adding elemental sulfur, or a readily available off the shelf soil acidifier. But understand that it can take several seasons to accomplish your goal if a big change is needed.

Good luck!
