Frost damaged ferns.

Asked May 10, 2020, 8:52 PM EDT

My fiddlehead ferns got frost damaged last night when temperatures dropped below freezing at night in the middle of May. Is there anything I can do to revive them? If I trim them, will they grow back? These are an important part of my landscaping so I hope I can bring them back.

Thank you for your question. They may well not regenerate this year. If you prune off only the brown parts, the remainder of the fern will continue to photosynthesize, and the plant will regrow next year. Best to mulch year round to retain water in the summer, and insulate roots in the winter.
