What type of mulch should I use?

I've been reading that wood mulch can be harmful to plants. What kind of mulch would you recommend that I use in my garden beds after I plant my annuals?

Wood mulch, when used properly, is not https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/mulchharmful to plants.
You can use it after planting and watering your annuals, just not more than 2-3 inches, and don't lay it right up against the stems of the plants.
