Hickory shells in compost

Asked May 8, 2020, 10:29 AM EDT

I asked a question previously about hickory nuts on the soil and whether or not they were preventing plant growth. Either due to quantity or chemicals that may be in them.). New question:I had checked on the Internet and read that it was OK to put them into my compost pile. Just wondering, now, if that was a mistake.

According to PA state Extension, not a good idea.

Please read the second link in the other email you sent which covers the allelopathic properties of hickory, including the husks/shells.
