American Dog Ticks

Is there a surge of American Dog Ticks in Oakland County this year? We have seen 5 on ourselves in the last 2 days, but have never seen them previously.

Dog ticks are the most common tick species that most Michiganders will encounter. With the recent increase in temperatures, arthropods including ticks have started to emerge from their winter dormancy. This year's mild winter may be responsible for slightly higher number of ticks than normal. However, it is still too early in the season to know if this will be a high tick year.

It is a good idea to do a quick tick check after heading outdoors to wooded areas. If you are uncertain about the identity of any other ticks you find, the MI Dept of Health has a nice graphic on common tick species https://www.michigan.gov/documents/emergingdiseases/5commonticks_282020_7.pdf.
