Asked May 4, 2020, 10:39 PM EDT

Four or five deer have been frequenting my back yard where I cook out during the winter. I ant to be able to use the yard. I use deet based insect repellent when I visit the yard. is there an organically based method that can be applied? what repellents can be used? Thank you.

Hi - Treating a whole yard for ticks is not something we recommend. The first course of action would be to take steps to reduce habitat areas for ticks; mow regularly and clear any tall grasses or brush that is close to the areas of the yard you frequent most often. If you have bird feeders, move them to an area of the yard that you don't go to frequently; mice that come to eat bird food are carries of ticks. The CDC has additional tips for creating a tick-free zone,

For repellents, DEET is very effective as are products that contain Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, picaridin, or IR3535. Clothing/shoes treated with the tick repellent permethrin are also very effective.

The University of Rhode Island's Tick Encounter is an excellent and reliable resource for further information about ticks and preventing bites,
