Help with Spider Identification

Asked May 3, 2020, 2:46 PM EDT

Found this spider on the back of my car before gently sweeping it off. Didn’t get a chance to snap a picture next to a ruler as it was outside at the trail parking lot and it ran away too quickly. I’ve never seen one of these and wondered what it was and whether it’s poisonous. Lived in Maryland 36 years and I have never seen one.

We viewed your photo and the good news is that it is NOT a poisonous spider. This is a male spider and spider identification keys are based on female spiders.
In general, spiders are general predators and help keep the pest insect population down. Here is our page on spiders https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/spiders-maryland
