Arborvitae with bare side

Asked May 3, 2020, 10:12 AM EDT

Will arborvitae get new green growth on a bare side? We had 3 large trees in a row and removed one because it was too close to the house. Now I would also like to remove a wall but this will leave a bare side exposed. Can I expect new growth to fill in? The small bare branches exposed are live and supple.

New growth will not grow from bare areas. The problem is that arborvitae does not regenerate new growth when you cut back into the bare, wood toward the inside of the branches. Also, there is a lack of sunlight in the area and they grow best in full sun.
If this is in a prominent location in the landscape, you will have to consider replacement.
