Recommended Native Flowering Vines to Cover a Privacy Screen

Asked May 1, 2020, 7:04 PM EDT

Have a 4x8 cedar privacy fence (photo attached) that I'd like some recommendations for "fast" growing native flowering vines to train up and over. Soil is very clay so I'll have to amend with potting soil and compost anyway. Partial afternoon sun. Thanks for the help.

Thank you for your question. I assume you know that this is not the ideal time to plant perennial plants (October to March is better), and that you're going to have to water it/them well during our predicted very dry summer.

I wonder if you have considered one of the members of the honeysuckle (Lonicera) family? You can find several varieties in the following publication, about 7/8 of the way down: http://nativeplantspnw.com/deciduous-shrubs-vines/

There some other options here: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/techniques/pacific-nw-native-plants-plant-community

BTW, you don't want to add potting soil to native soil. Adding "top soil" and compost will help make the soil easier to to work. . Here is some guidance: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/news/add-organic-matter-improve-garden-soils

Good luck!
