How do I kill this weed?

Asked May 1, 2020, 9:37 AM EDT

My little house and garden are under a big hill, so water runs down to us .2 years ago when we started to get more rain, I noticed this weed and have not been able to get rid of it either by pulling out or with weed killer. What is this prehistoric looking weed and how can I get rid of it? Thank you for advice!!!! Regards, Cumberland MD

This looks like hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta).
It is an annual weed that thrives in the cool spring weather. Eventually the plants die when the weather gets warm, but they are notorious for their effective seed dispersal prior then! It tends to show up in bare spots or where lawn is mowed too short. Here is our page about hairy bittercress and what you can do to manage it in a lawn, https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/hairy-bittercress

In addition, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has a good article that goes into further detail about this plant, https://www.bbg.org/news/weed_of_the_month_hairy_bittercress
