Strange plant

Asked April 29, 2020, 4:58 PM EDT

I have had this plant in the lawn for a few years. It seems that I getting more patches this year.when I pull it up it seems to have a extensive root system. So do I just keep pulling it up or use a chemical? I have Prediamine down now but that is basically a crabgrass killer. I have used Spectracide liquid which seems to slow it down but doesn’t knock it out. Dandelions yes this weed no. Regards, Dean Rothgeb

This plant is known as common chickweed (Annual). Typically seeds germinate in the fall so they escape your attention. Then they take off quickly in the spring, growing, flowering and spreading seed about before the summer months. Here are a couple of articles about this plant with control strategies. https://www.canr.msu.edu/weeds/extension/common-chickweed http://www.msuturfweeds.net/details/_/common_chickweed_26/
