garden boxes

Asked April 28, 2020, 4:42 PM EDT

I just built two beautiful 8x4x2 foot raised beds for the back yard in Bend, and now I'm realizing that I don't know what to fill them with. I'm looking to grow basic seasonal vegetables and leafy greens. I had imagined that I would use 2/3 sand or dirt, topped with 8-10" of nice soil. I called Instant Landscaping and they recommended that I reach out to you for advice. thanks, Brian Sullivan

Thank you for your question, Brian. Sand at the bottom won’t hurt, but it doesn’t retain water nor nutrients, and some plant roots go far down. Here is an OSU article with ideas on raised bed fill: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/fs270/html Good luck!
