Rabbit and poultry meat sales

Asked April 28, 2020, 12:43 PM EDT

Do I need to have a license from MDARD to sell rabbit and poultry that is raised and slaughtered on my farm? What is the maximum number to be sold to not be USDA inspected?

Chippewa County Michigan

USDA exemptions apply for poultry under 1,000 or 20,000 birds raised annually. It depends on who and how the poultry is sold if a license is needed from MDARD. More information is available regarding this at: https://www.canr.msu.edu/resources/poultry-processing-in-michigan.

Rabbits are only voluntarily inspected by USDA and do not fall under an exemption from USDA because there is no inspection requirement for rabbits by USDA. The process for MDARD licensing related to rabbits is similar to the poultry licensing and could be incorporated into one MDARD license if one is needed.
