Weed identification and solution
This is called chickweed (Stellaria sp.). It is an annual plant that thrives in cool weather and is most often found in moist shady areas (but can move into other areas as well). Chickweed is native to Europe and Asia and is common now in most areas of Maryland.
If you want to remove it in a lawn, the most natural solution to getting rid of it would be to hand-pull or dig it out before seed dispersal. Montgomery County’s pesticide law bans the use of most synthetic pesticides, including herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides on private lawns, playgrounds, mulched recreation areas, and childcare facilities. Organic pesticides are allowed. There are some exemptions for the use of
synthetic pesticides, including for biting insects, indoor pests, and tree and shrub pests. Go to the following website for information regarding the law and organic lawn care information, www.MontgomeryCountyMD.gov/lawns You can also ask them questions.
