There are many suitable varieties on the market. When selecting a variety look for those that say pickling cucumbers not slicers. The ones that are specifically used for pickles will have a thicker, bumpy skin with little black spines and will be shorter than the slicing varieties. If you want the petite size you just need to pick them when they are small. When they get big the tend to produce soft pickles, but can be eaten as slicers or make into relish.

As for varieties there are many out there and it is a matter of preference. A good standard varieties are Boston Pickling, National Pickling, and County Fair. There is also a couple bush pickling variety great for small spaces, and then there are a number of hybrids out there that are also great. Just look at the package and pick one that is specifically bred for pickling and not slicing.
