Flowering Plum Tree

Asked April 22, 2020, 11:01 AM EDT

My flowering plum tree started dropping leaves last summer. It is doing this again now. I noticed two gashes on the trunk last Fall. A few limbs seem to be dying. What is causing this and how can I stop it? The tree is at least 14 years old and always used to be healthy.

Branch dieback may be due to several issues such as poor planting techniques, drought, poor drainage, cankers, etc.
In general, these are not long lived trees. Please send us photos of the tree, around the base, and affected trunk areas so we can see what you may be dealing with.
