Horsetail week in blueberry patch

Asked April 19, 2020, 9:38 PM EDT

Hi, We have a 8 year old established blueberry patch that gets over taken by the horsetail weed. We weed it every few weeks but it's impossible to get the roots and days after weeding they are sprouting up again. Is there something we can use on them that won't harm our plants? Thank you, Darcy

Horsetail is very difficult to control. It is not susceptible to herbicides and takes repeated weeding to keep it from overtaking plants that you want to keep.

You best bet is to use a sharp hoe or weed whacker to cut the stems every couple of weeks. Over years, this gradually can decrease the root system and new stems will be reduced. It takes patience and perseverance.

I am sorry I don't have better news for you.

Good luck.
