Lawn Aeration in spring

Asked April 19, 2020, 6:48 PM EDT

I live in the 21742 zip code area and starting to read more about lawn management. To help with drainage, compact soil issues, is it okay to aerate the lawn now, during spring, and overseed? Or is it recommended to wait until fall?

The best time to aerate is early fall, especially before overseeding. There is less weed competition then. However, you can aerate spring or fall.

Fall is also the best time to seed.

Please read through our very thorough page about renovating and overseeding lawns: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/lawn-renovation-and-overseeding

And here is a page dedicated just to aeration: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/lawn-aeration

Explore the other pages on lawn care, they cover just about everything!
