Good Morning,

American Hazel Nuts do not depend on insects for pollination. They are wind pollinated. Male and female flowers are produced on the same tree, but are separate. Male flowers are catkins and females are small and slightly reddish feathery and very small. Pollination occurs from December through February, depending on weather.

While hazel nuts are generally self-fertile, it doesn't hurt to have multiple trees to insure enough pollen is being blown around to generate nuts.
