What is this plant?

Asked April 18, 2020, 9:57 AM EDT

I have discovered a new plant growing in among a section of river rock in my yard. The rock is designed to help water drain from the yard during heavy rainfall and the area is moist more often than not. Is this new plant an invasive weed?

Unfortunately, yes, this is a terribly invasive plant called lesser celandine (Ficaria verna). It is very difficult to control and may require a combination of techniques (hand digging and herbicide). This can take time. Do not expect management in one season. See our website and resource links for information and management options.

This is a tough plant on some of our Maryland native plants so it is worth trying to manage it. Here is an article on it from the Maryland Invasive Species
