Many native bees nest in the ground. It could potentially be one of the native bumblebees in our area. However, since I cannot specifically identify it for you from description, I am including links to publications from Oregon State University, “Guide to Common Pollinators in the Willamette Valley of Western Oregon”; Oregon Department of Agriculture, “Common Bee Pollinators of Oregon Crops”; and the Xerces Society and Portland Park and Recreation, “ Pocket Guide to Identifying Bees of Portland”. You should be able to narrow the options to give you a general idea of what kind of bee you are seeing.

Enjoy learning a little more about native bees.
