When to thin peaches?

Asked April 15, 2020, 12:13 PM EDT

Hi, I have a peach tree which has just undergone petal fall and I'm wondering if now is the right time to thin the peaches for larger fruit. Last year I didn't think and I had a ton of peaches but they were fairly small so this year I'm hoping to get some larger fruit. Thanks!

Begin hand thinning when the fruits are about ½ inch in diameter. Start at one end of a branch and systematically remove fruit, leaving one fruit every 6 to 8 inches. Keep in mind that only 5% to 10% of the tree’s flowers are needed to set a full crop of fruit.
