Overseeding and pre-emergents

Asked April 10, 2020, 1:27 PM EDT

Hi, I am in Rochester NY and overseeded my lawn last mid October. Would it be safe to apply a pre-emergent this spring( now), or will it kill my new growth grass?

Thank you,
Angela

Dear Angela,

Thank you for contact eXtension with your question. Pre-emergents should not be applied until your seed has sprouted thickly.

Most pre-emergent herbicides kill germinating grass seed for many weeks, the number depending upon the one you use. read the label carefullg. It should indicate when and how much to apply.

Pre-emergents containing siduron might be applied sooner.

One product containing siduron is Tupersan. Here is specific information on pre-emergents, including siduron (Tupersan): https://extension.umd.edu/sites/extension.umd.edu/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/non_HGIC_...
