Beneficial Moss for Ditches - Washington County

Asked April 10, 2020, 11:47 AM EDT

We have a drainage ditch that we have drain rock in and it keeps growing weeds that are unfavorable. As an alternative we'd like to grow moss in the ditch instead to help prevent erosion. Is there any types of moss that are recommended for NW conditions and can handle the droughts of the summer?

I'm not sure moss is a good alternative. You may want to evaluate native plants or those that are recommended for rain gardens. Metro has the following pamphlet https://www.oregonmetro.gov/native-plants-willamette-valley-yards-booklet East Multnomah Soil and Water District has a good site on rain gardens https://emswcd.org/in-your-yard/rain-gardens/

Thanks, I wasn't aware of the rain garden option. We'll review these to find the right solution.

Thanks again.
