Asian giant hornets

Have the Asian giant hornet arrived in Oregon. If so, how can I as a hobby gardener and beekeeper help protect our bees?

Hi, Asian Giant Hornets have not yet been sighted in Oregon and we are working hard to keep it that way. The best source of information is from Washington State University and the Washington Department of Agriculture. They are both enlisting the aid of citizens to keep a lookout for this invader. The department of agriculture link contains good descriptions as well as photos of other wasps. There is information about how to report a sighting. WSU has developed a mobile phone app for reporting sightings.

They are asking people to not try to eradicate the wasps themselves, but to leave that adventure to the researchers. Your job for your bees to pay attention to the flying insects that you encounter this year.

Thank you for contacting Extension and then for participating in this vital effort to keep this invader from becoming established here.
